Google Announces New Workforce Training and Energy Affordability Programs in Virginia
Alongside Governor Abigail Spanberger at the Richmond Electricians’ Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee facility, Google today announced a major expansion of statewide programs designed to support Virginia workers and lower household energy costs.
The initiative marks the next chapter of technological innovation in the Commonwealth, focusing on training the skilled labor workforce required to build modern digital infrastructure while simultaneously expanding local energy affordability.
Google has operated offices and data centers in Virginia for more than 15 years. This latest community funding reinforces Google’s commitment to creating economic opportunity, supporting thousands of regional jobs, and responsibly managing energy resources across the state.
“Virginia is winning the competition for talent and technology because we offer what businesses need most right now — stability, a skilled workforce, and a state that shows up as a reliable partner,” said Governor Abigail Spanberger. “Google’s investment in workforce training and energy affordability is exactly the kind of partnership that keeps Virginia ahead and ensures that the growth of our tech economy creates real opportunity for Virginia workers and families.”
Accelerating Virginia Tech Jobs and Economic Growth
Google’s presence continues to serve as a powerful economic engine for the Commonwealth. In 2025 alone, Google’s data center investments and operations in Virginia supported upwards of 17,000 jobs and contributed approximately $2.3 billion in gross domestic product (GDP) to the state economy.
To prepare residents for the high-quality careers generated by these infrastructure investments, Google is providing new funding to the electrical training ALLIANCE (etA). This grant will help local electrical apprenticeship training facilities scale up their capacity, supporting an additional 2,741 apprentices by 2030—effectively increasing Virginia’s pipeline of new electricians by roughly 135%.
“Virginia’s leadership in the technology economy is driving strong demand for skilled electrical workers, and Google’s investment will help us train more of them here in the Commonwealth,” said Gregg Spicer, Director of the Richmond Electricians’ Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee. “By expanding electrical apprenticeship opportunities, we can prepare more Virginians for good-paying careers while building the workforce needed to power, wire, and maintain America’s digital infrastructure.”
This initiative is part of a broader national commitment by Google’s philanthropic arm, Google.org, to train more than 300,000 skilled tradespeople across 14 labor unions and four trade associations.
Scaling Clean Energy Capacity and Lowering Utility Bills
As Google expands its digital infrastructure, the company remains focused on increasing local grid capacity and protecting consumer energy affordability. Within the Commonwealth, Google’s comprehensive energy strategy includes:
- Investing in over 500 megawatts of new clean energy capacity.
- Developing next-generation technology, including fusion energy and modernized hydropower.
- Collaborating with energy partners across the 13-state PJM electricity grid to unlock flexible energy resources.
- Championing regulatory proposals that keep consumer utility costs predictable and affordable.
The $15 Million Virginia Energy Impact Fund
To address energy costs at the household level, Google launched a $15 million Energy Impact Fund dedicated to driving down monthly utility bills for Virginia families. The fund will finance critical community projects, including home weatherization, emergency repairs, and energy-efficiency upgrades.
As an inaugural recipient of the fund, FLIPP Inc. will use the support to expand its Trades Workforce Development Program, training clean energy workers to deliver these vital upgrades to communities that need them most.
“With the funds from Google, FLIPP Inc. will be able to build upon our organization’s existing programs, deepen relationships with our employer partner network, and shape a skilled workforce ready to deliver energy-efficient upgrades across the Commonwealth,” said Raye Elliott, Executive Director of FLIPP Inc. “Through Registered Apprenticeships and clean energy credentialing, we are turning this investment into permanent, sustainable career pathways in the skilled trades.”
