Homer City Energy Campus Names Corey Hessen as CEO to Lead Transformation into Nation’s Largest Natural Gas-Powered Data Center Hub
In a landmark move set to reshape the energy and technology landscape, Homer City Redevelopment LLC (HCR) has appointed Corey Hessen as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. Hessen succeeds William A. Wexler, who will transition into the role of Chairman of the Board for HCR’s parent company. With over 25 years of experience in the energy sector, including expertise in power generation and asset development, Hessen is poised to lead the transformation of the former Homer City coal power plant into a state-of-the-art natural gas-powered data center campus, bringing unprecedented economic opportunity to the region.
A Vision for America’s Digital Future
The Homer City Energy Campus, located on a sprawling 3,200-acre site, is designed to meet the surging demands of artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC)—key drivers of America’s digital economy. This ambitious project aims to deliver up to 4.5 gigawatts (GW) of power, supporting hyperscale data centers while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 60–65% per megawatt hour compared to the former coal plant. The campus represents a monumental step toward sustainable energy solutions and positions Pennsylvania as a leader in the global digital infrastructure race.
As CEO, Hessen will oversee all aspects of the long-term development and management of the campus, including construction, power generation, and natural gas production. He will also collaborate closely with key partners such as Kiewit Power Constructors Co. and GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV), ensuring seamless execution of this transformative project.
Decades of Expertise Driving Innovation
Hessen brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having overseen the development of billions of dollars in new power generation assets throughout his career. His leadership spans executive roles at industry giants like TC Energy (NYSE: TRP), Constellation Energy Group (NASDAQ: CEG), Exelon Corporation (NASDAQ: EXC), and Xcel Energy (NASDAQ: XEL). Most recently, he served as CEO and Partner at Black Diamond Energy Partners, where he managed asset acquisition, operational functions, and transaction structuring.
Andrew Shannahan, a Partner at Knighthead Capital Management, LLC and member of HCR’s parent company’s Board of Directors, praised Hessen’s appointment:
“Corey brings decades of experience leading transformational energy projects from inception to power generation, which will be vital to the redevelopment of the Homer City Energy Campus. His firsthand experience managing the assembly of the GE Vernova turbines that will power this facility makes him uniquely qualified to drive this project forward. We are confident that Corey is the ideal leader to ensure the success of this initiative alongside our talented HCR team.”
Shannahan also expressed gratitude to outgoing CEO William A. Wexler, stating:
“We want to thank Bill for his dedication during the initial phase of the project and for helping us accelerate our ability to unlock the immense economic opportunities this project will bring to Indiana County and the surrounding community. We look forward to his continued involvement as Chairman of the Board.”
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The Homer City Energy Campus is projected to deliver significant economic benefits to the region, creating thousands of jobs and attracting billions in investment. Key highlights include:
- 10,000+ direct on-site construction-related jobs during the development phase.
- Approximately 1,000 permanent high-paying positions in technology, operations, and energy infrastructure once the campus is operational.
- An initial capital investment exceeding $10 billion for power infrastructure and site readiness, with additional billions expected from data center development. This marks the largest such investment in Pennsylvania’s history.
By leveraging previously secured long-lead power components and generating sufficient capacity to serve multiple large data center customers, the campus will not only support cutting-edge AI and HPC technologies but also supply power to thousands of homes on the local grid.
A Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation
The transition from coal to natural gas-powered energy underscores HCR’s commitment to sustainability. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adopting cleaner energy solutions, the Homer City Energy Campus aligns with broader environmental goals while meeting the growing demands of the digital age.
Hessen expressed enthusiasm about his new role, stating:
“The Homer City Energy Campus is going to be a game changer for energy generation in Pennsylvania, the entire Indiana County community, and America’s digital future. I am thrilled to join the HCR team at such a pivotal moment and look forward to working closely with our best-in-class partners and local and state leaders to ensure Homer City’s transformation happens as quickly and seamlessly as possible.”
Why This Matters for Pennsylvania and Beyond
The redevelopment of the Homer City site represents more than just an energy project—it symbolizes a bold step toward economic revitalization and technological advancement. By transforming a former coal plant into a hub for innovation, HCR is creating a model for sustainable growth that other regions can emulate. The project also underscores the critical role of public-private partnerships in driving large-scale infrastructure initiatives.
With Corey Hessen at the helm, the Homer City Energy Campus is poised to become a cornerstone of Pennsylvania’s economy, providing clean energy solutions, fostering job creation, and positioning the state as a leader in the global digital infrastructure landscape.
