IEEE Advances Global AI Governance with Key Contributions to the International AI Standards Exchange
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, has announced that its extensive portfolio of over 100 global AI-related standards is now part of the newly established International AI Standards Exchange. This centralized repository aims to foster collaboration and promote responsible AI development on a global scale, ensuring that AI technologies are developed and deployed in ways that benefit humanity.
The inclusion of IEEE’s AI standards in the Exchange stems from the recognition of their impact in the 2024 United Nations AI Advisory Body’s Report, Governing AI for Humanity, which highlighted the need for international cooperation in AI governance. IEEE, as a leading standards body, played a pivotal role in shaping this initiative and was invited as a key partner in establishing the Exchange.
A Commitment to Advancing AI for Humanity
Speaking at the AI for Good Summit during the High-Level AI Standards Panel, Kathleen Kramer, IEEE President and CEO, emphasized the organization’s mission: “IEEE’s commitment to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity is at the core of everything we do. The work of the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA) demonstrates how inclusive, collaborative efforts across the global community can drive meaningful progress. By contributing our standards to the International AI Standards Exchange, we are making trusted, open, and high-integrity resources more accessible to policymakers, developers, regulators, and other stakeholders who are working to build globally interoperable and ethical AI systems.”
IEEE SA has long been at the forefront of addressing the challenges posed by AI and autonomous systems. Its comprehensive ecosystem of standards, frameworks, and programs provides practical solutions to ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness in AI development and deployment.
Pioneering Ethical AI Standards and Frameworks
One of the cornerstones of IEEE SA’s contributions is the IEEE 7000™ standards series, which focuses on the ethical and societal implications of AI and autonomous systems. These standards address critical issues such as transparency, privacy, algorithmic bias, and accountability, offering actionable guidance for developers and organizations.
Another landmark initiative is the Ethically Aligned Design (EAD) Framework, which has inspired global discussions on embedding human rights and ethics into AI systems. This framework has informed key international AI principles, including those adopted by the OECD and aspects of the UN Global Digital Compact, serving as a foundational reference for evolving AI technologies and their applications.
Certifying Responsible AI Practices
To further bolster trust in AI systems, IEEE SA developed IEEE CertifAIEd™, a groundbreaking personnel credentialing and product certification program. This program evaluates AI systems for transparency, accountability, and bias reduction, providing organizations with credible evidence of their adherence to responsible AI practices. CertifAIEd aligns with emerging regulations, such as the EU AI Act, and is designed to meet the requirements of jurisdictions worldwide, including the United States, China, Canada, the United Kingdom, and beyond.
CertifAIEd addresses critical criteria such as algorithmic bias, ethical transparency, privacy, and accountability, ensuring that AI systems are not only compliant but also aligned with global ethical standards. This initiative supports manufacturers, governments, and NGOs in implementing robust AI governance frameworks.
Fostering Collaborative Policy Development
IEEE SA’s Technology Policy Collaborative (TPC) offers a unique platform for government bodies, policymakers, and stakeholders to collaborate on addressing the impacts of technological innovation. Through TPC, adaptive governance approaches and practical solutions are developed to maximize the benefits of AI while mitigating risks. This collaborative model ensures that policies remain relevant and effective in an ever-evolving technological landscape.
Global Recognition and Ongoing Impact
The work of IEEE and its communities continues to receive widespread recognition in the AI field. For instance, the JRC Report on AI Standardization highlights the organization’s contributions to bridging gaps in AI governance. Additionally, IEEE SA’s initiatives, such as enabling CertifAIEd assessors to evaluate AI systems, have empowered organizations to adopt standardized practices and achieve compliance with international norms.
These efforts collectively support the realization of recommendations outlined in the UN AI Governance report, offering practical pathways for standardization and implementation where gaps exist. By leveraging its global expertise and adhering to World Trade Organization (WTO) principles, IEEE SA ensures that its standards and frameworks are contextually applicable at national, regional, and international levels.
A Global Approach to AI Governance
“IEEE SA is a globally recognized and respected standardization body, offering multiple pathways to achieve consensus while adhering to WTO principles,” said Alpesh Shah, Managing Director of IEEE SA. “What sets us apart is our ability to apply collective global intelligence contextually, whether at the national, regional, or international level. Our contribution to the International AI Standards Exchange reflects the global nature of our work and its ongoing impact in advancing ethical and trustworthy AI systems.”
As AI technologies continue to evolve, the need for robust governance frameworks becomes increasingly urgent. IEEE’s inclusion in the International AI Standards Exchange underscores its leadership in driving global collaboration and fostering responsible AI development. By making its standards and resources widely accessible, IEEE is empowering stakeholders worldwide to build AI systems that are transparent, accountable, and aligned with human values.
