Enterprises across North America are entering a transformative phase of maturity as Agentic AI redefines the role of IT from a cost center to a strategic engine driving measurable business value and autonomous operations. According to the latest research report, Agentic AI and the Future of Enterprise IT, published by Digitate—a leading global provider of Agentic AI platforms for autonomous IT operations—organizations are embracing intelligent systems to accelerate their journey toward becoming fully autonomous enterprises.

The 2025 study, conducted by Sapio Research and based on responses from 600 IT decision-makers across the U.S. and Canada, builds on Digitate’s 2023 (U.S.) and 2024 (Europe) studies. It reveals near-universal AI adoption, growing maturity, and increased trust in AI systems, unlocking significant returns on investment (ROI) and positioning IT as a cornerstone of the autonomous enterprise. The findings underscore how Agentic AI is reshaping IT operations, fostering collaboration between humans and machines, and delivering tangible business outcomes.

Key Findings: AI Maturity and ROI Across Industries

The research highlights several critical trends shaping the future of enterprise IT:

  1. Generative AI Dominates Adoption:
    Generative AI (GenAI) remains the most widely deployed AI model, with 74% of organizations leveraging it. Additionally, over two in five organizations have introduced Agentic AI (44%) or agent-based AI (43%), signaling a shift toward more advanced, autonomous systems.
  2. Widespread Use of Multiple AI Tools:
    Every organization surveyed has implemented AI within the last two years, using an average of five AI tools across various functions. This diversity underscores the versatility of AI in addressing complex business challenges.
  3. High Levels of Trust in AI:
    Trust in AI is strong, with 94% of organizations considering AI trustworthy. However, this figure dips slightly to 87% in sensitive sectors like healthcare and government, reflecting heightened scrutiny in regulated industries.
  4. Accelerating Toward Autonomy:
    Today, 45% of enterprises operate at semi- to fully autonomous levels, a number projected to rise to 74% by 2030. Remarkably, 53% expect to achieve full autonomy within the next five years, driven by advancements in Agentic AI.
  5. Strong ROI Validates Investment:
    Organizations report median returns of $175 million on AI implementation investments averaging $71.6 million. These figures highlight the financial benefits of adopting AI at scale.
  6. ITOps Leads AI Adoption:
    IT Operations (ITOps) leads AI adoption, with 78% of organizations deploying AI in this area. Notably, 65% see the greatest benefits in ITOps, followed by software development (52%) and business intelligence (51%).
  7. Human-AI Collaboration Takes Center Stage:
    Agentic AI is augmenting human capabilities rather than replacing them. While 67% find Agentic AI most useful in ITOps, only 25% foresee job replacement. Instead, 62% expect these systems to assist in new functions, enhancing accuracy, efficiency, and productivity.

    Improved accuracy (44%), enhanced efficiency (43%), and stronger data management (42%) are cited as the top realized benefits of AI implementations.

From Automation to Autonomy: A Three-Year Trajectory

Digitate’s research spans a three-year global initiative tracking enterprise AI maturity across North America and seven European regions. What began as a drive for automation efficiency has evolved into a strategy focused on delivering measurable ROI. Since 2023, AI adoption has surged, with organizations now leveraging an average of five AI tools. North America leads in ROI and scalability, while Europe excels in governance and ethical oversight, creating complementary paths that balance speed and resilience.

IT Transitions from Cost Center to Strategic Engine

Across industries, ITOps remains the proving ground for AI success. While 46% of organizations still view IT as a cost center today, they anticipate this perception shifting toward profit generation within 2-3 years. High-investment enterprises (spending over $500 million on AI) report the greatest ROI, demonstrating a direct link between scale and strategic value. Organizations prioritize AI solutions that enhance accuracy (54%) and offer personalization (51%), indicating that functionality currently outweighs transparency in driving adoption.

Agentic AI: Augmenting Human Capabilities

The majority of organizations are adopting an AI-human collaboration mindset. Over half of respondents see Agentic AI transforming essential tasks (52%) and enabling departmental reorganization (53%). Major use cases for AI agents in the next 12 months include cost optimization (65%) and proactive issue management (55%). These systems have proven particularly effective in enabling customer self-service (49%) and reporting/analytics (48%), areas where agents outperform traditional AI tools.

This evolution positions IT as a value creator rather than just a service provider, unlocking higher levels of accuracy, agility, and business performance.

Navigating Strategic Tensions and Challenges

While the research highlights optimism, it also reveals persistent challenges. A “strategy-execution gap” is emerging, with C-suite executives showing slightly higher trust in AI (96%) compared to non-executives (94%). Executives focus on profitability and ROI, while practitioners emphasize efficiency and accuracy. Barriers to adoption vary, with leaders citing governance and cost control, while operational teams highlight technical skills and integration.

Additionally, 94% of organizations cite drawbacks with existing AI tools, including human intervention (47%), implementation costs (42%), and ongoing oversight. Nearly all (96%) face adoption obstacles, primarily due to a lack of technical skills (33%) and insufficient budgets (31%). Rising technology costs (42%) rank as the second-biggest external threat after cybersecurity (49%).

Despite these challenges, organizations are deploying AI to address the very pressures they face, using it to reduce IT complexity (28%), enhance profitability (22%), and improve productivity (22%). The winners will be those that balance automation with augmentation, optimizing costs without eroding the human expertise that powers AI’s success.
