Amazon Launches AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region, Bolstering Cloud Innovation in Taiwan
Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), has announced the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to Taiwan and the broader Asia-Pacific region. This new infrastructure region will empower developers, startups, enterprises, and organizations across industries—including education, entertainment, financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and nonprofits—to run their applications and securely store data within Taiwan. The launch also ensures compliance with local data residency requirements while delivering single-digit millisecond latency to end users.
As part of its long-term investment strategy, Amazon plans to invest more than $5 billion in Taiwan to support the construction, operation, and maintenance of the AWS data centers. This substantial investment underscores Amazon’s dedication to fostering technological innovation and supporting Taiwan’s position as a global leader in the digital economy.
Enabling Innovation with AWS in Taiwan
The AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region consists of three Availability Zones at launch, bringing AWS’s total global footprint to 117 Availability Zones across 37 regions. AWS Availability Zones are designed to provide high availability, fault tolerance, and low latency by placing infrastructure in separate, distinct geographic locations. Each zone is equipped with independent power, cooling, and physical security, ensuring reliable and resilient cloud services for customers.
“The new AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region will enable organizations of all sizes to build and scale with confidence using our comprehensive suite of cloud services,” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS. “From foundational compute and storage to advanced analytics and artificial intelligence, businesses across Taiwan and the Asia-Pacific region can now leverage the same world-class infrastructure that millions of companies rely on globally. This will accelerate innovation, enhance operational efficiency, drive business growth, and deliver better experiences for end users.”
Taiwan’s government has welcomed the launch, recognizing it as a testament to the country’s pivotal role in the global technology supply chain. Mr. Jung-tai Cho, Premier of Taiwan, expressed his appreciation, stating, “This investment demonstrates Taiwan’s solid foundation as a hub for technological collaboration. We are pleased to see AWS deepen its partnership with Taiwan to accelerate digital transformation and promote emerging technologies such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence. Together, we look forward to fostering a robust digital ecosystem that advances global technological innovation.”
Supporting Local Businesses and Global Enterprises
The new AWS region is already being embraced by a wide range of Taiwanese organizations, including prominent names like 104 Corporation, 91APP, Acer, Cathay Financial Holdings, Chunghwa Telecom, CyberLink, Gamania Group, KKCompany, Modernity Financial Technologies (MaiCoin), Trend Micro, TSMC, and Yahoo! TW Ecommerce. These organizations are leveraging AWS’s broad portfolio of services to innovate, optimize operations, and deliver enhanced experiences to their customers.
AWS Partners in Taiwan, such as CKmates, eCloudvalley Digital Technology Group, Going Cloud, MetaAge Corporation, Netron Ltd., and NextLink Technology, are also playing a critical role in driving cloud adoption and supporting customer success. Upskilling the Workforce for a Cloud-First Future
To support the growing demand for cloud skills in Taiwan and across Asia-Pacific, Amazon continues to invest in workforce development initiatives. Programs like AWS Academy, AWS Educate, and AWS Skill Builder are empowering students, developers, technical professionals, and nontechnical workers with the knowledge and expertise needed to thrive in a cloud-first economy. Since 2017, Amazon has trained over 9 million people across Asia-Pacific and Japan, including more than 200,000 individuals in Taiwan.
As part of its commitment to the region, AWS plans to hire and develop additional local personnel to operate and support the new AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region. This effort will not only create job opportunities but also contribute to building a skilled talent pool capable of driving Taiwan’s digital transformation.
Advancing Sustainability Goals
Amazon is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040, a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement timeline, as part of The Climate Pledge. AWS plays a vital role in this mission by designing energy-efficient data centers and adopting innovative technologies to reduce its environmental impact. According to a report commissioned by AWS and conducted by Accenture, AWS’s infrastructure is up to 4.1 times more energy-efficient than traditional on-premises solutions. Furthermore, when workloads are optimized on AWS, the associated carbon footprint can be reduced by up to 99%.
The launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region aligns with these sustainability goals, offering customers secure, reliable, and energy-efficient cloud infrastructure. By migrating to AWS, organizations can reduce their carbon emissions while benefiting from cutting-edge cloud technologies.
Expanding AWS’s Footprint in Taiwan
The AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region builds on Amazon’s ongoing investments in Taiwan, which include:
- 2014: Launch of an Amazon CloudFront edge location in Taipei to accelerate content delivery.
- 2018: Establishment of two AWS Direct Connect locations, enabling private connectivity between AWS and customers’ on-premises environments.
- 2020: Introduction of AWS Outposts, delivering AWS infrastructure and services to on-premises or edge locations for a consistent hybrid experience.
- 2022: Expansion of AWS Local Zones in Taipei, placing compute, storage, and other services closer to end users to achieve ultra-low latency.
With the addition of the new region, AWS will establish another AWS Direct Connect location in Taipei, further enhancing connectivity options for customers.
Driving Growth and Innovation Across Industries
The launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region positions Taiwan as a key player in the global cloud ecosystem. By providing secure, scalable, and low-latency cloud services, AWS is enabling businesses of all sizes to innovate and compete on a global scale. Startups, enterprises, government agencies, and nonprofits alike will benefit from access to AWS’s extensive portfolio of services, including analytics, machine learning, generative AI, networking, and more.
