VeriSign Reports 378.5 Million Domain Name Registrations Worldwide at the End of Q3 2025
VeriSign a global leader in critical internet infrastructure and domain name registry services, announced the latest domain registration figures from the Domain Name Industry Brief Quarterly Report, published by DNIB.com. According to the report, the third quarter of 2025 concluded with 378.5 million domain name registrations across all top-level domains (TLDs) — marking a net increase of 6.8 million domains, or 1.8%, compared to the second quarter of 2025. On a year-over-year basis, total domain name registrations grew by 16.2 million, representing a 4.5% increase.
This consistent upward trajectory underscores the growing importance of the domain name ecosystem in supporting digital identity, e-commerce, and innovation across industries.
Growth of .com and .net TLDs
The report highlighted the continued dominance of the .com and .net top-level domains, which remain the backbone of the global domain name landscape. Together, .com and .net reached a combined total of 171.9 million domain name registrations in the domain name base by the end of Q3 2025 — an increase of 1.4 million names, or 0.8%, compared to Q2 2025.
Year over year, the combined base of these two TLDs grew by 2.4 million, reflecting a 1.4% increase. As of September 30, 2025, the .com domain base accounted for 159.4 million registrations, while .net represented 12.5 million registrations.
New registrations for .com and .net domains totaled 10.6 million at the end of Q3 2025 — a significant rise from 9.3 million new registrations in the same period of 2024. This jump highlights sustained global demand for domain names under these long-established extensions, often preferred by businesses, startups, and individuals for their credibility and brand recognition.
Country-Code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs) Continue to Expand
The report also detailed growth within country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs), which represent internet addresses specific to nations and territories. At the close of Q3 2025, total ccTLD registrations reached 144.8 million, reflecting a gain of 1.4 million, or 1.0%, from the previous quarter. On a year-over-year basis, ccTLDs grew by 4.8 million registrations, or 3.4%.
This increase underscores the continued localization of the internet and the role of country-specific domains in supporting regional businesses, government services, and localized digital identities.
The top 10 ccTLDs as of September 30, 2025, were:
- .cn (China)
- .de (Germany)
- .uk (United Kingdom)
- .ru (Russia)
- .nl (Netherlands)
- .br (Brazil)
- .au (Australia)
- .fr (France)
- .in (India)
- .eu (European Union)
These extensions collectively account for a large portion of ccTLD registrations worldwide, driven by rising internet penetration, national digital transformation initiatives, and growing trust in region-specific online identities.
