Grammarly’s Authorship Expands to Microsoft Word and Google Docs: Empowering Students and Educators with Transparent AI Tracking
In a groundbreaking move set to revolutionize how students and educators approach writing in the AI era, Grammarly has announced the expansion of its Authorship feature to Microsoft Word and Google Docs. This development comes as part of Grammarly’s ongoing commitment to fostering transparency, academic integrity, and productivity in education. With enhanced features for analytics, citations, and AI/plagiarism detection, Authorship is now poised to become an indispensable tool for students, faculty, and institutions alike.
What Is Authorship?
Authorship is a student-first process tracker designed to provide clear documentation of the writing process. It allows users to identify which parts of a document were human-created, AI-generated, or AI-edited. Since its beta launch in Google Docs six months ago, Authorship has generated over 3 million reports, with daily usage peaking at 41,000 during busy academic periods. Now, with its general availability in Google Docs and beta release in Microsoft Word, Authorship is accessible across virtually all platforms where students engage in long-form writing.
“Authorship works everywhere students write, and it’s credible because the reports can’t be manipulated, making it both student- and educator-friendly,” said Jenny Maxwell, Head of Grammarly for Education. The tool not only empowers students to take ownership of their work but also provides educators with valuable insights into how students are leveraging AI and external resources in their assignments.
Why Authorship Matters in Education
The integration of AI tools into education has been both a blessing and a challenge. According to recent surveys, 89% of higher education leaders estimate that at least half of their students use AI tools for coursework. However, 80% of instructors feel that institutional AI guidelines are insufficient. This disconnect highlights the pressing need for solutions like Authorship, which bridges the gap between innovation and accountability.
By offering transparent tracking and detailed attribution, Authorship helps ensure academic integrity while giving students the freedom to explore the benefits of AI-assisted writing. Faculty members who have embraced AI usage in their classrooms are already requiring students to use Authorship to document their writing processes. “It’s a win-win for both parties,” Maxwell added.
Educators like Nathan Fayard, Assistant Professor of English at Indiana Wesleyan University, see immense potential in Authorship. “Not only does it help ensure students are actually doing their work, but it can also protect students from false positives on AI detectors,” Fayard explained. “It gives them a way to document where different parts of their work came from.”
New Features Enhance Transparency and Efficiency
With this expansion, Grammarly is introducing several advanced features to Authorship, further empowering students and educators:
- Authorship Analytics:
Available for institutional customers, this feature provides aggregated insights into how students are using generative AI and external sources in their assignments. These analytics give educators a clearer understanding of student workflows and areas where additional support may be needed. - Speedy Citations:
Pre-formatted citations from Authorship reports can now be copied and pasted into documents with just one click. This feature is available for Grammarly Pro, Grammarly for Education, and Grammarly Enterprise users, streamlining the citation process when external sources—including AI-generated content—are used. - AI and Plagiarism Detection:
Results from Grammarly’s AI and plagiarism detection tools will now be directly integrated into Authorship reports. While premium users gain access to these advanced capabilities, Grammarly Free users can still utilize basic Authorship functionality.
Seamless Integration Across Platforms
One of Authorship’s standout qualities is its ability to function seamlessly across web and desktop applications. Grammarly’s presence in over 500,000 apps and websites ensures that students can track their writing process no matter where they work. Whether drafting essays in Microsoft Word, collaborating on group projects in Google Docs, or using other platforms, Authorship delivers consistent, high-quality text attribution.
Additionally, Grammarly plans to introduce an assignment integration feature within learning management systems (LMS) later this fall, ahead of the 2025–26 academic year. This update will allow educators to incorporate Authorship directly into their grading workflows, further enhancing its utility in educational settings.
Grammarly for Education Now Available in AWS Marketplace
To make its AI-powered writing tools more accessible to educational institutions, Grammarly has launched Grammarly for Education in the AWS Marketplace. Schools and universities using Amazon Web Services (AWS) can now purchase and manage Grammarly licenses through their existing AWS accounts. This streamlined process simplifies the adoption of Grammarly’s tools, enabling institutions to equip students with essential writing assistance without logistical hurdles.
Currently serving over 3,000 educational institutions, Grammarly continues to expand its reach and impact. By integrating with AWS, Grammarly is making it easier than ever for schools to invest in technology that supports student success.
A Step Forward in the Age of AI
As AI becomes increasingly integrated into education, tools like Grammarly’s Authorship play a critical role in ensuring ethical and transparent usage. By providing students with the means to document their writing processes and educators with actionable insights, Authorship fosters trust, accountability, and mutual visibility.
For students, Authorship is more than just a writing assistant—it’s a tool for growth and empowerment. For educators, it’s a resource for maintaining academic standards while embracing the opportunities presented by AI. Together, these advancements represent a significant step forward in preparing students for success in an AI-driven world.
