In a groundbreaking move, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), part of the U.S. Department of Energy, has selected IQM Quantum Computers to deliver its first-ever on-premises quantum computer. The system, known as IQM Radiance, is a 20-qubit upgradeable full-stack superconducting quantum computer that will be integrated into ORNL’s high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. This milestone marks a significant step forward in advancing hybrid quantum-classical application development and solidifies ORNL’s leadership in quantum-HPC integration.

Scheduled for delivery by the third quarter of 2025, the IQM Radiance system will provide researchers at ORNL with direct access to cutting-edge quantum computing technology. Designed to accelerate research across various scientific domains, the quantum computer is based on superconducting qubits—a technology widely regarded as one of the most promising approaches to building scalable quantum systems. Moreover, the system’s upgradeability ensures that it can scale to higher qubit counts in the future, keeping pace with advancements in quantum hardware.

The decision to acquire an on-premises quantum computer underscores ORNL’s commitment to exploring seamless integration between quantum computing and traditional HPC systems. For decades, ORNL has been at the forefront of high-performance computing, housing some of the world’s fastest supercomputers. By integrating quantum capabilities into its existing HPC infrastructure, ORNL aims to unlock new possibilities for solving complex computational problems that are currently beyond the reach of classical systems alone.

“ORNL has a long-standing reputation for excellence in high-performance computing and is now leading the charge in quantum computing research within the United States,” said Travis Humble, advisor to ORNL’s Quantum Computing User Program (QCUP) and director of the Quantum Science Center at ORNL. “With the installation of IQM Radiance, our researchers will have hands-on access to state-of-the-art quantum technology. This will enable us to explore how quantum computers can complement HPC systems and achieve early demonstrations of quantum advantage.”

The acquisition of IQM Radiance builds on ORNL’s ongoing efforts to advance quantum computing through collaborative initiatives like QCUP. Earlier this year, ORNL announced its partnership with IQM Resonance, a cloud-based platform designed to facilitate advanced quantum research. By combining cloud-based resources with on-premises hardware, ORNL is creating a robust ecosystem for quantum innovation.

IQM’s selection as the provider for ORNL’s first on-premises quantum computer highlights the company’s growing influence in the global quantum computing landscape. Since entering the U.S. market, IQM has leveraged its expertise in quantum technology, strategic partnerships, and educational outreach to drive adoption and research. The collaboration with ORNL represents a major milestone for the company and reinforces its position as a leader in delivering practical quantum solutions.
