IQM to Invest Over €40 Million in Expanding Finland Production Facility to Drive Innovation and Growth

IQM Announces €40 Million Investment to Expand Finland Facility, Spearheading Quantum Computing Innovation

IQM Quantum Computers, a global leader in superconducting quantum computers, has unveiled plans to invest over €40 million in expanding its state-of-the-art production facility in Finland. This strategic move aims to accelerate the development and fabrication of advanced quantum processing units (QPUs) while significantly boosting system assembly capacity. The expansion underscores IQM’s commitment to scaling its infrastructure and advancing its ambitious technology roadmap, which targets the production of one million quantum computers by 2033.

A Leap Forward in Quantum Production

The expanded facility, spanning 8,000 square meters, will house one of the world’s most advanced integrated quantum computer production lines. This cutting-edge setup combines the fabrication of quantum chips with the assembly of full-stack quantum systems under one roof. By nearly doubling its cleanroom space and system assembly line capacity, IQM will be able to produce up to 30 quantum computers annually, addressing the growing demand for scalable, error-corrected quantum systems that promise to revolutionize computing.

The new facility is designed to meet the rigorous requirements of next-generation quantum technologies. It will feature enhanced cleanroom equipment, enabling the production of large-scale quantum chips critical for error-correction—a key milestone on IQM’s roadmap to achieving fault-tolerant quantum computing by 2030. The expansion is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026, positioning IQM at the forefront of quantum innovation.

Fueling Growth Through Strategic Expansion

This investment aligns with IQM’s recent Series B fundraising round, which raised over $300 million. The funds are being channeled into scaling the company’s critical data center infrastructure and production capabilities globally. By expanding its operations in Finland, IQM is not only enhancing its ability to deliver high-quality quantum solutions but also reinforcing Europe’s position as a hub for quantum technology leadership.

Pasi Kivinen, Vice President of Operations at IQM Quantum Computers, emphasized the significance of this expansion: “This will be one of the world’s most advanced production facilities for quantum computers, integrating assembly lines with chip production. This approach will enable us to scale up in critical areas essential to delivering quality, quantity, and stable, advanced solutions to the market. The expansion is an important step to deliver next-generation quantum computers to serve our customers and make a remarkable impact.”

Commitment to Sustainability

As part of its broader mission, IQM is taking concrete steps toward creating a carbon-neutral production facility. The company plans to install an abatement system to mitigate direct emissions from its manufacturing processes and transition to 100% renewable district heating. These initiatives reflect IQM’s dedication to sustainability and responsible innovation, ensuring that its advancements in quantum computing align with environmental goals.

Strengthening Europe’s Quantum Supply Chain

Beyond commercial scaling, this investment plays a pivotal role in bolstering Finland and Europe’s quantum supply chain. By localizing chip manufacturing and quality control, IQM is contributing to the EU’s quantum strategy, which seeks to enhance technological sovereignty and global competitiveness in quantum innovation. This move ensures that Europe remains a key player in the rapidly evolving quantum landscape, reducing reliance on external suppliers and fostering homegrown expertise.

Jan Goetz, Co-CEO and Co-founder of IQM, highlighted the broader implications of the expansion: “By enhancing our fabrication capabilities to produce large-scale quantum chips for error-correction technology, we will not only better serve our customers but also reinforce our leadership in superconducting quantum computing. This investment is a testament to our vision of making quantum computing accessible and impactful on a global scale.”

Driving the Next Era of Computing

Quantum computing holds immense potential to transform industries ranging from pharmaceuticals and materials science to artificial intelligence and cryptography. However, realizing this potential requires overcoming significant technical challenges, including error correction and scalability. IQM’s expanded facility is purpose-built to tackle these challenges head-on, providing the infrastructure needed to develop and deploy reliable, high-performance quantum systems.

The integrated production line will streamline the entire process—from designing and fabricating quantum chips to assembling and testing full-stack quantum computers. This end-to-end approach ensures consistency, quality, and efficiency, enabling IQM to deliver cutting-edge solutions that meet the demands of both research and commercial applications.
